History of SOPMOD

In the year of 1990s, United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) start a new program - Special Operations Peculiar Modification (or "SOPMOD"), to find a solution for extra requirements of special force infantry weapon, and to assemble all additional combat gears or parts, which allows Special Operatior to configure their weapons to individual preferences and mission requirements.
In conclusion, the "SOPMOD M4" were finished. Base on a standard Mil-Spec rail system called "Picatinny Rail"(MIL-STD- 1913 rail), it has been added to a quad rail handguard from Knight Armament, then the rifle and extra gears can be assembled by this standard rail system, made SOPMOD M4 an easy-to-use and could be combination with any accessories which have the same port. After tested and actual use, this system was popular to every U.S. and foreign military units. Even created many similar system and weapon, like the Mk18 Mod0 CQBR of U.S. NAVY.

Although SOPMOD M4 was successful, in 2001, next program - "SOPMOD II" was ready to improved those weapon once again. To enhance the capability of combat, All-weather and fit to multiple mission use. Most important improve is the new handguard rail system for the rifle, named "RAIL INTERFACE SYSTEM II", or much famous one - "RIS II",
which is an innovative upgrade to the M4 platforms, an uninterrupted Upper Rail Platform with quad Mil-Spec 1913 Picatinny Rails, Free-Floating design and a sightless gas block, made by aircraft grade 6061-T6 aluminum, full precision CNC machined and military specification type II hard coat anodized with flat dark earth color. Also a new type of Hardened Steel Barrel Nut for the stability of installation. Another similar one is "RIS II FSP" system, RIS II FSP feature a cut-out in the top rail to accommodate a standard front sight base on a carbine-length gas system.
All these new rail system (or a combination upper-receiver kit) were sent to the troops on 2005, and used by many Tier-1 units and the U.S. special force. In recent years, these tactical weapon system has been seen on all main battlefield and still an Irreplaceable weapon.
