In mid 90s, Knight Armament Company (KAC) in Florida got the SOPMOD (Special Operations Peculiar Modification) project from US DOD, they use their RIS (Rail Interface System) to provide a standard system which allows the various tactical attachment such as rail-mounted devices, flash light…etc; it also brings a new epoch of modular weapon system.

According to the response from the battle field, America’s Army have new needs for Rail Interface System (RIS).To match the needs of America’s Army, KAC keep upgrading to make the newest URX (Upper Receiver Extending) system.The URX provides several advantages. It provides an uninterrupted rail and does not increase the height of the rail over the barrel, which may cause sighting problems for attached optics. With the URX installation, the barrel is free-floated, allowing for increase accuracy. Besides, URX lower rail could be easier removed to mount M203 grenade launcher or make maintenance convenient.

At the mean time, KAC also came out the concept of IWS (Integrated Weapon System), which make URX integrated with some accessory such as spare folding front sight, quick detached sling mount…etc. to increase the combat and tactical ability in the entire weapon system.
